Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach second grade at a low-income, inner-city school in Texas. All of the students at my school are eligible for free or reduced price lunch, and many are also learning English as a second language. My students came to me at the beginning of the year performing very poorly in math, and we have big goals to make each one into a master mathematician by the end of the year!
My students absolutely love when we have math center time. They are constantly asking when we will get to do math centers, and I can't blame them! From a teacher's perspective, center time is the best way to make sure that every student is being reached, because they can each be working on separate activities designed to meet their specific needs. During center time, I also get to work with whichever small group of students needs the most help with a topic or skill. Not only is it a great learning opportunity, but centers can also be a lot of fun!
My students need a variety of math centers designed to reinforce and review the skills they are learning in math. The center activities will review critical skills such as telling time, addition and subtraction, place value, geometry, fractions, counting and adding money, patterns, and more! These centers will allow them each to master all of the skills being taught in math while having fun and learning that even though math can be challenging, math skills are important and valuable to their lives.
Your help will ensure that my students know all of their addition and subtraction facts, can tell time, know how to count and add coins, can recognize and identify fractions, know how to interpret and create bar graphs, and so much more! You will make it possible for my students to learn all of the important math skills as well as grow to love math and realize its importance. You can turn a classroom of second-graders into a classroom of mathematicians!
