This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in a public school in Baltimore, MD in a co-teaching Kindergarten classroom. Having forty-five students in one large space is busy, but exciting! The students are always learning from one another, and take on many of the responsibilities of caring for our classroom. Our Kindergarteners are exploring, inquiring, and creating daily in small groups and play-based learning stations. We are lucky to have a school community that supports student agency and personal choice in making their own learning come to life!
My Project
Due to the nature of our co-teaching space, the majority of our student learning takes place in small groups throughout the day. In our current classroom, we have zip-tied tables together in an attempt to create spaces that allow for small group collaboration, discussion, and creation. Often, students cannot hear each other reading or sharing out due to the nature of the table setup.
True small group tables in a kidney shape will help students focus on one another during learning times, eliminate the need for table zip ties, and create added space in our classroom for more play based learning stations.
