My students need a pencil sharpener and ink so assignment can be readily available and they finish their work without the interruption of a broken pencil.

My Students
My students come to class prepared to learn! They enter with their materials, leaving any "baggage" at the door. Yet, my classroom is not prepared for the everyday occurrence of a pencil breaking or papers to be printed.
My students attend a historically low performing school and are in desperate need of some transformational changes in how they are educated.
The majority of the students I teach are the lowest performing students at the school; they are academically at risk of dropping out. They are faced daily with the struggles of poverty, violence, and low expectations. Despite this, my students are profoundly inquisitive. They are resilient and creative beyond belief. They are light-hearted, caring, and vocal. They process and interpret the world with a point of view that only a small portion of our society has the opportunity to witness. I come excited to work every day because there is so much potential and promise with these young minds.
My Project
A class pencil sharpener will maximize instruction time and note taking for my student. Daily, students have to stop when their pencils break and travel to another classroom to sharpener their pencil or scavenge for another writing utensil from their peers. Also, my school does not have the resource to provide a printer for teacher use. So I've purchased a printer on my own to assure that my students always have anything they need. As a high school teacher, I have almost 200 students. Often, I print Spanish-English resources for my student who just arrived from other counties or assignments that student may have missed due to an absence. Currently our printer is out of ink, but with ink we will be able to continue to have assignments and resources readily available.
Though my students live in poverty and attend a school with little resource, my greatest wish for them is to be able to reach their highest potential regardless of any obstacles.
I teach my students not to make any excuses for them becoming excellent. I'd like to be able to help them conquer as many obstacles as possible. Receiving these small but necessary classroom materials serve as one obstacle that we can eliminate and not allow to stand in the way of excellence.
