Small Books with Big Meaning: Picture Books for Allegorical Analysis

My Project
As a Literary Analysis course team, my colleagues and I designed an activity that uses children's picture books as an introduction to allegorical analysis. This introduction allows students to learn the content specific terminology and quickly practice applying it in a formative, low stakes manner before they study and apply this knowledge to a larger, more sophisticated novel.
Aside from the grade level learning taking place in this activity, high schools students enjoy the nostalgia of "story time"!
We typically encourage students to select a book with a small group and take turns reading it aloud which takes them back to their elementary roots. The comfort of story time not only add to our efforts to build community, it creates a safe space for students to take educational risks as they devour new content.
The specific titles in our request comes from many years of renting these books from our district's elementary schools. However, in recent years, our numbers have grown significantly, and it has become more difficult to fulfill the borrowing request to meet the needs of all students in the course sections.
