Throughout this school year, I have noticed that my students are not familiar with the importance of annotating text. Most rush through and are unable to meet the most basic 7th grade state standards, such as the theme, main idea, or how the various story elements develop. Meaningful reading is a learned skill and one that has recently, I feel, been neglected. I have been very successful explaining annotation and its importance one-on-one with students. The iPad and pencil will afford me the ability to have that one-on-one experience with the entire class at one time. Through this technology, I will be able to annotate and model my thinking in real time on the Promethean Board to everyone at once. In addition, I will be able to allow small groups of students to conduct jigsaw lessons using the technology. Adding technology made available through the Apple iPad and the Apple Pencil will allow my students to see first-hand how thinking about reading actually works and how it aids in analyzing and understanding various texts. Slowing down reading is valuable skill which many lack in our increasingly fast-paced world. The iPad apps also allows for these presentations to be recorded. These recordings can then be uploaded to Google Classroom, thus students will have the flexibility to view these lessons at their own pace.
My ESOL and SPED students, in particular, will greatly benefit from the modeling of reading and annotating while having the ability to discuss in real-time as it happens.
The recordings that can be used for refinement and practice of the skills are icing on the cake. The ability to break down meaningful reading will benefit my students for a lifetime!
