My students need sensory experiences that allow them to understand how exciting science is! I am requesting a laboratory kit, mix and measure activity set, and slime, snow and sand.
My students from rural Oklahoma are part of the Head Start program. This class is highly diverse. Our classroom has many students who are in the foster care system as well as various students on IEPs. Every day these students come to class energetic to learn, explore, and discover new things. One of my favorite things about working for the Head Start program is it allows students to make great leaps in knowledge before they attend public school.
This summer we are spending time learning about science before my students head to public school in the fall.
I want to give them a variety of experiences that allow them to be on the same level of background knowledge as their peers. I plan to focus on activities that can be completed in small groups and engage my students' love for exploration.
My Project
I want to create a science center where my students can experience the most magical part of science: watching something change or working hands on to create something new with materials. The items I selected will help with both. The slime, snow, and sand allow students to see a change and experience working with a material they helped create. I have noticed that in centers my students have the best time when they are able to be completely creative and come up with something using their hands. The slime, sand, and snow are not only science experiences but sensory experiences that my students who have learning disabilities will be engaged with.
Science allows a variety of learners to experience something that seems like magic but is rooted in education.
The tools I selected will not only assist with the slime, sand, and snow projects but will allow my students to work on their fine motor skills. I have found that some of them easily get bored playing with the same toys we have for scooping in our sand sensory table. I plan on using the science lab kit tools to further engage them in the basics of measuring, pouring and combining liquids.
