My Students
My students are the movers and shakers of the next generation in this rural town. They live in the same town that inspired me to become a third generation teacher to this school. We are a challenged rural school serving some military families with over 60% free and reduced lunches for students. Backpacks with food are sent home with needy students each weekend. Despite the economic challenge they face, these students are bright and willing learners. They know that education will improve the quality of life for them and their families.
My Project
In 1997 a group of volunteers from our community raised funds and built two large playgrounds for our elementary school. Until that time, we did not have any playgrounds in our entire county. These were the first large slides that our children had to play on in our own community! The playgrounds are always full of children and receive lots of use during and after school hours. I love that they are getting exercise, social interaction and problem solving skills while enjoying themselves at play.
A year ago, one of the slides became cracked and not safe to use.
We had to take it down and replace it with a piece of plywood as our school did not have the funds to purchase a replacement. There are plastic buckets over the poles in the gravel that it bolts to.
Additionally, the steps on the multi-level swing bridge have been used so much that the protective safety coating is completely worn off with bare metal showing on the edges. This makes the steps harder for the students to navigate as they are slick on the edges. These need to be replaced with new swing seat steps to make it safer for the students to play on.
Would you help us replace the slide and steps to refurbish this playground for our children?
