This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I love to see my students talking with one another and working out ideas in real time. Last year I started using some strategies from Peter Liljedahl to get more students engaged with each other and with the content and skills of the day's lesson. One of these is having students stand at "nonpermanent vertical surfaces" in order to think and write together. Basically, they stand and work in small random groups at dry erase boards.
My students hate being called on in a large group, but they light up and take leadership when they are in a smaller group and are able to make mistakes and learn together.
It sounds simple, and it is! However, even simple strategies require resources, and in this case I need white board surfaces for 12 groups to work at once so I can keep group sizes small. Whether we are analyzing literature or organizing ideas for writing, these simple resources will help greatly!
