My Students

Echolocation being used by the blind! Children in my classroom will learn to empathize with people they don't understand through the study of animals that they don't understand. They will also study about conservation issues around the world.

This is a public school in Oklahoma.

We team teach at our school so these materials will be able to touch more than one class of 4th graders each year. Budgets are being cut and there is not much funds available to purchase extra resources. Children in my class love to hear stories read and these books will really hold their interests and help them understand issues relating to bats.

My Project

Most children have a fear of bats that is the result of a lack of knowledge about them. Once children gain an understanding that they are harmless animals, most of them gain an appreciation for their usefulness and uniqueness. We will use the study of bats to help students develop empathy for people and conservation issues around the world. I am requesting three books to read to students, one educator's guide that includes student projects, and one bat skeleton so that we can study how the bat skeleton resembles the human hand.

Our school is currently stressing empathy as a character trait that is lacking in too many students.

I hope to encourage empathy in students through the implementation of this unit.
