My Students
Having just begun my second year a teacher, and my first as a full time teacher of record, I was absolutely blown away by the students in my AP Literature class during the first two days of school. The level of passion and excitement was something that only came in glimpses in the previous school year, when I was at a different school completing a teaching residency program, and I can't even begin to express my own excitement for the rest of this school year.
Most of my students live in the South Bronx or Upper Manhattan and lack the many privileges I had growing up in the suburbs of Long Island.
They are predominantly Black and Hispanic, and many of them are first generation Americans, the children of immigrants from various regions in West Africa as well as Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, and still more are immigrants themselves.
My Project
Kurt Vonnegut's seminal novel Slaughterhouse-Five will serve as our class text for a unit on satire and science-fiction. Some of the essential questions of the unit include (but are not limited to): What is the role of satire? What is the significance of non-linear narrative? What is the function of an unreliable narrator?
The text reinforces many of the themes underlying the course, such as how we as individuals cope with (or rather indulge) uncertainty in literature and in life, how we as readers have a responsibility to construct the meaning of literary texts, and how we as human beings have agency in constructing meaning from experience.
