Kurt Vonnegut's seminal novel Slaughterhouse-Five will serve as our class text for a unit on satire and science-fiction. Some of the essential questions of the unit include (but are not limited to): What is the role of satire? What is the significance of non-linear narrative? What is the function of an unreliable narrator? The text reinforces many of the themes underlying the course, such as how we as individuals cope with (or rather indulge) uncertainty in literature and in life, how we as readers have a responsibility to construct the meaning of literary texts, and how we as human beings have agency in constructing meaning from experience.
