My Students

Ever spoken to your favorite author to get the inside scoop on their thinking behind your favorite book? Ever had a book talk with someone on the other side of the country? For most the answer is "No".

Not for lack of trying but because it is very difficult and expensive to communicate with others, unless you use Skype.

My students live in an impoverished area of Los Angeles where technology is not always available. We have a few archaic computers in our classroom but they don't hold the capacity to help us launch into the 21st century.

My Project

My classroom is always buzzing about books. WE LOVE BOOKS! and WE LOVE AUTHORS! But there is one tiny problem. Famous authors such as Kevin Henkes and David Shannon are very busy and find it difficult to visit classrooms around the world. But with Skype, we can speak with them from our classroom without having to pay any fees to fly them over and not to mention their room and meals. Most authors are willing and are enthusiastic about speaking with budding young authors but find it difficult. Using Skype would make the impossible, possible. The materials I requested can help us do just that.

Book talks are one of the best ways to dig into books and improve comprehension.

Conversing about books within our own classroom has greatly benefited my students' test scores. Can you imagine how powerful it would be to Skype with other students on the other side of the country? If that does build engagement I don't know what will. The materials I have asked for will greatly help my low income students both communicate with others but also build their repertoire of technology. Please help!
