My Project

Hands on skill classes have suffered during and after COVID. Students need experiences to try challenging or intimidating skills like knife cuts in a safe and encouraging environment. In my culinary classes I am seeing delays in the fine and gross motor skills needed for consistent knife cuts. I am also seeing delays in reading and reading comprehension. The goal of my project is to provide supplies for students to feel confident and excited to try knife skills. I am also hoping to support students ability to read recipes by providing books at various reading levels, both fiction and non fiction, that would support students reading. Reading helps foster empathy in the reader and empathy and kindness go a long way in our culinary classes. Students must work together, fail in front of one another, and use critical thinking skills to solve problems. This works better when students can understand empathy and demonstrate effective communication skills which reading supports.
