This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Teaching life skills in special education is crucial, as it equips students identified with disabilities with the practical abilities needed to navigate daily life and achieve greater independence. These skills—such as organization, financial literacy, time management, personal hygiene, and communication, empower students to handle everyday challenges, make informed decisions, and build self-confidence.
By integrating life skills into the curriculum, I am helping my students develop the tools necessary for meaningful participation in their communities and future workplaces.
This approach not only enhances their overall quality of life, but also fosters a sense of autonomy and self-worth, ultimately contributing to a more inclusive and supportive society.
The books and materials (and snacks) within this DonorsChoose project will help me to engage my students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) in learning more about the laws that enable them to receive individualized support in the classroom, their disabilities, what it means for them both in and outside of school, learn about their IEPs, helping them make informed decisions about their IEPs and learning, and not only to be present members at their annual IEP meetings, but to lead their meetings with confidence.
