This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Sketchbooks will inspire my 4th and 5th grade art students to work on their drawing and writing skills.

I am the art teacher at a wonderful school in a high needs community. I try to give my students the best art experience I can on a very limited budget. It is a large school so I see a 4th and 5th grade class everyday for a seven week cycle then I wont see them again that school year. Some of them will go onto middle schools that have very limited art programs. My 4th and 5th graders are really interested in learning everything they can about drawing and I'm interested in giving my students as much exposure to the arts as I can, even when they aren't taking art.

I really want to be able to give each of my 4th and 5th graders a sketchbook when they cycle through my art class. My job as their art teacher is to teach them how to keep a sketchbook and how to incorporate writing about art, ideas and feelings in their books. What I can't supply for my students is the actual sketchbooks for them to work in. My students will be thrilled to be given a sketchbook and I feel it will empower them to take their art and feelings seriously. The really exciting part for me and my students is that they can take their sketchbook with them so they will continue to have a very personal art experience even when they are not in my class.

By supplying each of my students with a sketchbook you will make it possible for my students to really make connections with what they learn in art class and their own world. You will give them the opportunity to use skills they learn in my class to express themselves through drawing and written words for the entire school year.
