Hello! I am the Leadership High School art teacher. A requirement of passing my class is completing weekly sketchbook assignments. These assignments are in conjunction with in-class projects. For example, during a project where the students were drawing hands, they were assigned to draw 10 sketches of hands in their sketchbook. Without a sketchbook, students have difficulty practicing their new skills. Even more importantly, a sketchbook is an important space for them to express their ideas and opinions. For some students, it may be the only place where they have creative control. Most students cannot afford sketchbooks, and hand in their work on loose paper that gets lost or mishandled from being loose in a backpack. A sketchbook is a crucial tool for any artist, and the students greatly benefit from having this as a resource. They use the sketchbook throughout the year and submit it as part of their school wide portfolio that demonstrates communication, one of the school wide outcomes. Several students a year apply to art schools which often require sketchbook drawings as part of their application portfolio. Getting sketchbooks for our students would be a great asset to our arts program overall.
