This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Many of our students and families are struggling with homelessness, hunger, violence, and inconsistent home support. We are a Title One, middle school. We serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
The art room is a safe and inclusive place for creative expression.
My two hundred and forty middle schoolers have little to nothing of a formal visual arts education. Sixty of my students have special needs. These students attend their classes in a variety of settings. Depending on their needs, they attend my class with paraprofessionals or attend independently. Those sixty students are spread out throughout the six periods during the day.
Once in the art class, my students have access to the tools and supplies in the art room. Art develops fine motor and problem-solving skills. Art enhances communication and expression.
The COVID-19 pandemic has turned everything on its head. We have returned to the art studio. Your donation to this project will greatly help out our classroom.
Art promotes self-esteem and motivation to succeed.
My Project
The students have been through a lot this past twenty months. I am glad to have them back in the art studio making art, but we are missing one critical component.
It is important for budding artists to be able to have a safe space to write or draw their own thoughts; Up until this point, the mini lessons that they have learned are just a jumbled pile of papers.
Having their own sketchbooks gives them a unified place to take notes, make sketches, and attach visual resources like printouts and magazine pages.
