My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty urban school district, my scholars face daily challenges just getting to school. High crime rates, unemployment, and substance abuse issues are real problems facing many of my scholars as they enter the school building each morning. My scholars are often hungry and sleep-deprived because of the uncertainty and upheaval which is an ongoing cycle in their young lives. I am seeking new materials and supplies for my scholars to use during the new school year. They deserve to have new school supplies like their peers in more affluent school districts. Unfortunately, parents and guardians of my scholars face real problems and financial hardships which prevent them from sending their students to school with new school supplies and materials to make learning to read and write exciting.

Despite the real problems my scholars face outside of school, they arrive at school with an excitement to know they are in a safe and secure environment.

Within the walls of the school and in my classroom, my scholars are free to take risk and use their imagination and creativity to meet new learning goals.

My Project

This year has been a tough year for our scholars. We had anticipated receiving much needed school supplies at the beginning of the school year. However, because of funding problems we were not able to receive any of our requested items such as copy paper, card stock, pencils, glue sticks, and construction and writing paper. It nearly broke my heart having to use old supplies that were nearing the end of its usefulness.

With your help, we will be able to continue the second quarter of the school year supplied with useful resources to keep our teaching and learning right on track.

Having the needed resources will allow me to plan meaningful lessons that engage my scholars in meeting the goals we have established for this school year.
