Sixth Grade Smarties are Eager to Read Non Fiction!
My students need non-fiction books to help improve their literacy and strengthen their background knowledge.

My Students
What do you think of when you hear the word BARF? EWWWW.. maybe something slimy and smelly?!? My students think of books. WHY? In my classroom, BARF stands for Become A Reading Fanatic. I have a plethora of fiction texts in my room; I am lacking in non-fiction text. This is where I need your help.
My class is an E-STEM class.
A principle of E-STEM is inquiry- my students LOVE to ask questions. I hope that these non-fiction books will help not only answer some of their questions, but inspire them to think of more questions! We always are learning!
My Project
I hand picked nearly 50 books that I believe entice students to read more non-fiction. I plan on using these non-fiction texts in my classroom lending library. I want to expose my smarties to non-fiction text to help them make connections to real life, as well as to learn more about the world outside of their city. I also will be using several of the books in many of my comprehension strategy lessons; I will use these books to model synthesizing and questioning comprehension strategies as well as note taking skills. I will be having the students come up with their own text features (maps, captions, graphs, timelines, etc) for these books. I will have students use the non-fiction texts to write research papers. I can't wait to have these books in our classroom and share them with my students!
By exposing students to more non-fiction text, it will help build their background knowledge, making them more successful in reading, other content areas, as well as in life.
Studies show that the more background knowledge a student has, the better they will do on standardized tests and the more they will comprehend all other texts.
