There's something about a special seat at the front of the room that makes giving a presentation or sharing your thoughts about a book you've read an extra exciting moment. My students are the BEST! At our little rural community school in southern Virginia we have such a diverse population of students who come from different socioeconomic backgrounds and such varying educational levels but when they come in the library, they ALL get excited talking about books and sharing their thoughts about the books they are reading. One of the highlights of our library time is when I have students who volunteer to share what they have read, books they have finished and loved, and recommend books to others in their class. For this, I let them come up and sit in "the teacher chair" which sits a little higher and swivels. It gives them that little boost of confidence to open up and talk to their peers about books and reading and what they are discovering between the pages of the books!
Being able to sit in a special chair and share their experiences reading books has had such a profound effect on their peers' eagerness to read those shared books!
All of a sudden it's not the teacher telling them how special books are, but it is coming from a trusted peer their own age.......there's power in that! All of a sudden, reading a book has new meaning and students "want in" on that magical experience!
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
