This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Learning to be sedentary is extremely difficult for the kindergarten age group. I want to allow my students to get their necessary energy out, but still stay in their seat.
I have a new class of thirty energetic kindergarteners (16 girls and 14 boys) who are ready and willing to learn.
My school is located in a low-socioeconomic area (Title 1) of San Diego. We have many children from the Hispanic community where approximately eighty percent of students are English Language Learners.
My Project
For many of my students, kindergarten is their first experience in a classroom and social setting. So, sitting in one spot is extremely difficult. I want to teach my students that they need to sit in one spot for certain activities, but I know for this age group they need to move. These wobble cushions will allow my students to stay in one spot, but still have the ability to move around by wiggling on the cushions. My students will place the wobble cushions on their chair while doing seat work and bring them down to the carpet for whole-group lessons.
I understand that movement is important for all children and I believe that by providing these cushions for my students, they will be more focused on the task at hand.
I am hoping that this "active" sitting will limit the amount of students who jump out of their seats and cause distractions for the rest of the class. By using these cushions, I hope sitting still is a thing of the past.
