My Students

"How important is reading fiction in socializing school children? Researchers at The New School in New York City have found evidence that literary fiction improves a reader’s capacity to understand what others are thinking and feeling." (Scientific American)

Our students are a wonderful and dynamic group of almost 500 children who reside in a high poverty neighborhood in SE Washington DC.

Many of our great kids display amazing resilience and unique problem-solving abilities that have been honed by living in a high-needs environment. They benefit from having explicit guidance in directing those abilities to their best advantage.

My Project

Commonly, the ability of the students to direct their energy and strengths into the best outlets during a typical school day requires some time away from the general group to gather their thoughts and have time for quiet reflection. These materials provide the opportunity to be able to take comfortable seating and reading materials to any location in or out of a classroom, securing a little privacy at a moment of need. The books have been especially chosen to cultivate empathy in children, allowing them an opportunity to "take a break" from challenging circumstances and engage in positive examples of appropriate reactions to peers.

Imagine working in close quarters all day long, each work day, in a small room with 25 or so peers, plus a few extra "supervisors" thrown in the mix.

It could be overwhelming, right? That is often how children feel, and then those feelings are only intensified when they find themselves in challenging circumstances with their work or peers. Everyone needs a moment, from time to time, to reset and then dive back in fresh to give their best.
