My Project

I teach on California's largest federally recognized Native American tribe's reservation. My school serves approximately seventy-five percent indigenous students. The campus is nestled amongst the redwoods where they meet the ocean and river. This school is so rich with culture, with traditional Yurok houses in the front, and a handmade dugout canoe as you enter the front doors. Each child in my classroom absolutely loves learning, although the method and environment in which they thrive vary greatly. We incorporate a variety of learning strategies, arts integration, project based learning and inquire-based learning, to ensure that each student's needs are met, right where they are. They are truly an incredible group, and I am so lucky and thankful for this new group of learners.

Do you know how hard it is to get students to sit criss-cross applesauce for 60 minutes?

Our students are strong. They're brave. They're resilient. But even the mightiest heroes shouldn’t have to face assemblies and sports events sitting on a gym floor that’s harder than their math tests. Right now, our kiddos are sitting cross-legged for hours, shifting around like human Jenga pieces trying to get comfortable.

With your help, we’d like to bring in portable bleachers—so our students can cheer, learn, and celebrate without feeling like their tailbones filed a complaint. These bleachers will be a game-changer (literally) for sports events, performances, and any school gathering where we’d like students sitting on something besides the floor.
