it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This year, I was able to move to an old shop classroom. We have a lot of space. My current set up has tables with seating for 4. Students stay in this configuration whether working independently or collaboratively in groups. I received 4 floor seats this year and had no idea whether students would like to use them in the classroom. I've found that students who need a break from the large setting, enjoy being able to take a floor seat and work on their own in another space. I've also found that collaborative groups love to be able to work in this flexible setting, moving away from the tables and chairs to spread out their materials on the floor.
My students thrive when able to have choice in their work spaces.
The flexible floor seats are large enough for my 8th graders and lay flat for easy, space saving storage. There is enough room in the class for groups to work at their tables and to spread out on the floor. The seats are comfortable with a back rest and students have no issues working on devices or writing in their spirals. Giving students the choice in where they work may seem like a small thing, but the overall motivation and positive feelings that come from this are a huge benefit.
As adults, we choose our optimal work spaces whenever possible. I want to give that same choice to my students.
