My students need a spot to sit! If you've ever seen 6 and 7-year-olds try to find "their" spot, you'll know what I mean! Each second saved maximizes learning!
Remember your teacher saying, "Criss-cross applesauce?" Or, "Find your spot on the carpet"? These short sayings preceded the learning that made you the adult you are today! The faster my students get to the carpet, the more time we have for exploration, excitement, & learning.
The majority of my students are bilingual, with English as their second language.
We are in an urban Title I school that is just beginning to embrace technology (money was the big obstacle!). With lower grade class sizes increases, minutes with the teacher have dipped slightly. This presents the challenge of promoting independent activities that support learning, promote choice, support language development, and make kids happy to come to school.
My Project
"Inside Carpet!"
"Outside Edges!"
I utter these words at least 10 times per day, as I endeavor to facilitate my students through various learning activities and various curriculum-based activities. Lower elementary school is about keeping a child's attention, motivating them through novelty, and finding the balancing act between the two. Students will appreciate the organization the rug provides, the beauty it brings to the carpet, and the SAFETY it provides (a primary reason for requesting this carpet is to keep the cords down from our projector/document camera so we have fewer "tripping" incidents).
Each time we arrive at the carpet, 10 seconds-1 minute is lost as students arrange themselves, find their spots, assist friends in staying in their spot" before we are ready to move on.
That is an average of 5 minutes per day, 25 minutes per week, approx. 2 hours per month, and 20 hours per year gained with the presence of this carpet! That amounts to an unfathomable amount of learning! Enough time to close gaps for struggling students and challenge those who are ready for deeper understanding!
