Sitting Leads to Disabiltiy, Maybe Not with Wobbly Chairs

My students need 3 exercise chairs to keep them moving all day instead of walking for 5 minutes then sitting for 45 minutes.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Dr. David Geier speaks often on how sitting makes one more likely to be disabled. Students might rack up 6 hours of sitting time each school day. If they go home and sit and do homework, play video games, watch movies or TV, then we are looking at maybe 8+ hours sitting per day.

Families of low-economic status dominate our high school's population.

With this demographic, health is also usually more of a concern. Often these families lack proper education on nutrition and eating habits. As hourly employees trying to put food on the table, parents may not have the time for daily exercises and usually cannot afford a gym membership or healthier eating options. All of these factors increase a person's likelihood of becoming disabled. Also, male students often cause disturbances in classrooms because they are confined to a chair and told to sit still, but have an inherent need to move, even just a little. My class enrollment is up this year and we are short of chairs. Financial resources in my subject area are very limited, so any chairs we have are borrowed from other areas in our district.

My Project

Each day students will be given the option to sit in one of the chairs donated by you to allow them freedom to move, turn, wiggle and increase blood flow. Reducing corrective discipline and increasing student focus are the goal of this project. These three chairs will be our research phase to determine which one is more effective, rugged and feasible for our classroom. These will also help us determine student preference as we seek additional funding to continue building a class set of wobbly chairs after concluding our research. I plan to replace all of my standard chairs with some sort of "active" chair. These chairs will also serve a secondary purpose in reinforcing the class material as we cover core strengthening, healthy lifestyle choices and exercise.

I teach more than sports medicine as an athletic trainer.

I teach people how to save lives using First Aid / CPR / AED, and I also teach healthy eating habits, professional skills and lifestyle changes. If each year I can encourage one of my students to remain active and do my part to keep them from being disabled, then I will consider this project a success. With your gifts we can completely change one student's day each time she walks into my classroom.
