This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The best word I can use to describe my scholars is resilient. I teach in a Public Charter School in Northeast Washington D.C. where our school is surrounded around poverty. Literally they can walk out the school door and see violence and drug abuse. Despite their surroundings, and sometimes meager living conditions they come to class everyday with such a spirit of love, perseverance, and bravery. They are eager to learn, they are adaptive, and they keep going in the face of adversity.
During this pandemic these characteristics have shown more than ever.
For a lot of students our physical classroom is almost like their sanctuary. A place of safety, stability, and love. However, the absence of their security has not stopped them from being fully engaged virtually, showing kindness, and most of all learning. They come to class with great big smiles, questions about themes we are learning about, and most of all they love to share. They often make me forgot about the the issues of our nation with a simple " I love you Mrs. Bassil". These are my students that I call my "little resilient ones"!
My Project
During virtual learning we have observed the majority of our scholars sitting on the floor, walking around, or in bed during instruction. We know that every home environment is not an optimal environment for learning, however creating designed seating and comfort during virtual learning is imperative.
The bean bag chairs will create more focus, solace, and pride for our scholars to learn.
They chair will also put them in a posture of preparedness to learn. We hope that these chairs will also give them a sense of uniformity, inclusiveness, and community, by everyone having the same chair during virtual learning at home.
