My Students
Do you remember the first day of kindergarten? Were you scared? Excited? Curious? Every year I get the privilege of welcoming kids to their first day of school. It is such a wonderful and enriching experience getting to be their first teacher.
Our school is extremely diverse.
We have many kids in our school population that speak English as their second language. We have kids that speak Marshallese, Korean, Spanish, Tongan, Ilikano, and much, much more!
Our school is also in a high poverty area. Many of our kids qualify for free or reduced lunch. Our school is also the second largest elementary school in the state. We have over 1,000 students!
My Project
Our Kindergarten class is in a small portable classroom with a tile floor. We have one small area rug, but it is not near big enough for a class full of little bodies to sit.
Sitting is hard enough in Kindergarten, so when it is necessary, why not make it FUN?
With these alphabet carpet squares students can have their own individualized sitting space that can allow them to sit comfortably all around the classroom. In addition, the carpet alphabet carpet squares will provide additional environmental print in our Kindergarten classroom. Each square contains a letter of the alphabet, as well the word and picture.
It is also so important to teacher Kindergarteners the importance of personal space! These individualized carpet seats will model for students what is appropriate personal space and will hopefully encourage it!
