Sittin' on our Beans

My students need 4 bean bag chairs to not only have fun in but to develop those large motor muscles.

My Students

If you are of a certain age, that will not be mentioned, you will remember bean bag chairs. They are still around, but if you remember them as a kid, you will also recall what fun it was to sit in one and kinda loll around. What you may not have realized is that you were also helping your large muscles develop. Don't you wish getting your exercise was that easy now?

I teach handicapped students who are developmentally delayed.

All of my students have learning delays which means my job is more like playing with letters and numbers, but they also are under developed physically. All of my students have physical, speech or occupational therapy on a weekly basis. Some of them get it 4 or 5 times a week, and some get all 3 services. We are in southeastern North Carolina, where we are dependent upon agriculture to support our economy.

My Project

All of my kids need the extra workout so their muscle development will be good, and it can be done while getting the academic lessons in at the same time. Think back, didn't you just love sitting in your bean bag and reading a book? Picture my cerebral palsy child sitting in his chair, out of his wheelchair, and telling what numbers are what or what letters spell his name. My child with profound ADD, can use the chair as a "cooling off" or "re-focusing seat". Those that are not sure of their colors can be asked to go to certain chairs by color, showing their knowledge and get to sit and relax. Overall the chairs will help my students with muscle impairments.

All of the therapists are excited about this proposl, and the kids will work for the privilege of sitting in one of our "special" chairs.

I already have a rocking chair that we use for that, but now on those days we are having a rough morning, having the opportunity to go sit and look at a book or just sit, if we get our work accomplished is a big incentive. Thank you, for your time and support of public education. It does mean a lot to a teacher and to my students.
