My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty, free breakfast/lunch school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am always looking for ways to keep learning positive and upbeat.

My hope is that they are engaged and do not get discouraged in the safe environment of Peace Keepers Room 215.

Sticking to our motto 'Mistakes are proof that you are trying' reinforces that this is just a way of learning instead of something to be ashamed of.

My Project

After taking a week long class this summer I realized how difficult it really is to sit in an uncomfortable chair and try to stay focused on complex material. I often found myself sitting on the edge of my chair and stretching. Many of my students struggle with staying focused during class even with opportunities for movement.

This year in my class I have a student, who in fourth grade often caused trouble and would storm out of his classroom, I gave him the opportunity to sit on a exercise ball that I keep in my room when I hold small group.

His energy is transferred to the movement on the ball and his focus and behaviors have changed so much so that other students have commented. He now will simply switch out his chair for the ball when he needs it. I have one ball and many students who take turns using it for a chair. While the ball is a great option, it takes up a great deal of room in my already crowded class of 30 students. They are also susceptible to deflating, damage and are not easy to clean. Also balls must be deflated to store for the summer months. Hokki stools will provide the same opportunity for sitting with the ability to move without taking up so much floor space and maintenance.
