My Students

My students come from countries all over the world with vastly different backgrounds, which makes them each especially unique. They are eager learners, excited to learn English, and how to read. For some, it is their first experience in school and for many, their first time being read to. They quickly begin to love books and learning! They are faced with many challenges as they live in high-poverty neighborhoods and struggle to overcome language barriers, cultural differences, and gaps in their learning. They are strong and work hard to be the best they can be. The potential they have to succeed is enormous!

My Project

My students spend a lot of time on our classroom rug. We begin our day there for morning meeting, they sit together to participate in reading and math lessons, and they sprawl out there during independent work times. It is a true gathering place where all students should have a space. Unfortunately, our current class rug is small and worn out, so the students do not all fit together comfortably. We would love to have more space so that these whole group lessons can be more meaningful and interactive. The rug is a central space in our classroom, and we would appreciate a cozy spot to gather together.
