Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have the privilege of teaching 18 energetic second graders. My students come from very diverse backgrounds and face many challenges growing up in poverty, at times challenges that small children should not face. Approximately 86% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

School is a place where my students can relax, learn, and have their immediate needs met on a daily basis.

It is rare when my students are absent. Despite the challenges my students face, they are eager learners and come to school ready to learn daily.

My Project

Studies have shown that flexible seating (seating that allows students to move and wiggle) increases student focus and their ability to learn. I would like my students to have the option of using this type of seating, that may increase their learning stamina. Flexible seating is a wonderful option for the modern classroom. There have been many changes in our schools in the past 100 years, but old, hard chairs are still the only option in many classrooms. I believe allowing students the ability to wiggle or rock while they learn is important for engagement and learning. I already have various forms of flexible seating options in my classroom and I noticed a dramatic decrease in discipline and and increase in engagement.
