Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

While my school is labeled as "moderate poverty," 100% of my students are on the free/reduced price lunch program. Out of my 22 students, 18 ride the school bus to and from school. Some of my students are responsible for themselves after school until parents are able to return from work after dark. A few of my students dress get themselves to get ready for school and get on the bus without the help of a parent because their parents have early morning working hours.

No matter their lives at home, my students come to my class with smiles on their faces, eager to see what learning I have on the menu for the day.

My students are eager to learn and eager to please. I would like to be able to make their time with me in the classroom as safe as happy as possible. They deserve it!

My Project

At first, I didn't believe all the hype behind flexible seating in the classroom! In school, learned in classrooms with traditional seating until college, and I always felt that it was suitable for learning. A colleague purchased a few of these same stools for her small group area, and the day I sat on one was a game changer! I was hooked and knew that this would be an amazing asset for my students!

Have you ever heard that it is better to teach a child to fish rather than feed them?

Year after year, I see students hungry for learning, but they have many environmental distractions. This year, I have an especially endearing class because I have been their first-grade teacher, their fourth-grade teacher and now their fifth-grade teacher. I know these kids...and I know what they need. I've increased movement in the classroom to help my students to refocus, but having these 5 new stools in the room to help with the normal distractions that they face when learning in small group will be amazing for them!

No matter the grade, the same is constant: my students are highly capable, intelligent students that can think, speak, read and write in two languages. Many of students struggle because they don't yet realize how amazing of a gift they have. The ability to help their learning in any possible way is not only my privilege, it's my responsibility.
