Flexible seating allows students to make a choice about the location in the classroom in which they would be their best, and in turn, take charge of their own learning. It has been shown that students are more engaged and less disruptive when they have flexible options for where they sit. My second grade students are bright, curious, and ready to learn, but they are still young children who would really benefit from having other seating options in the classroom besides the traditional desk and chair.
Students will gain autonomy over their learning by being able to choose a seat that works for them.
The products that I have selected will allow students to pick something that fits their specific needs each day. The bistro table allows for a higher seat or even standing. The scoop rocking chairs and balance ball seats allow for movement while working if necessary. The butterfly chair offers a unique feel that is different than an average school chair. The variety of floor cushions will allow students to get comfortable in a lower position if that is what is preferred. The lap desks will allow for work to be continued regardless of where in the classroom the students are. Most of these products are lightweight and can be taken anywhere within the classroom.
I cannot wait to see the positive influence that these seats will have in my second grade students!
