Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 19 Kindergarten students in a high poverty area of New Mexico. 100% of our school population receives free breakfast and lunch. I teach the dual language strand of the Kindergarten level. All of my students come from bilingual Spanish-dominant families.
My students are eager to begin to learn to explore, discover, and create their own knowledge this year.
The most impactful way I can help my students be successful this year is by providing them with the resources they need in the classroom.
My Project
In Kindergarten, the majority of our learning takes place in a large group on the floor. This allows us to have close proximity with our classmates so we can collaborate, work, and learn together frequently. On the carpet, students are also more fully engaged with less distractions from their surroundings. However, as 5 and 6 year olds, we are still learning how to cooperate with others in a classroom setting; sometimes we need more guidance and structure to help us.
This classroom carpet will provide us not only with a designated place to sit, but will also add a fun aspect to our learning.
Students learn best when they feel like they belong and have ownership. With this carpet, each student will have a shape and color to sit on. This provides a wonderful opportunity to help practice shapes and colors while also giving structure to our learning.
