My students are part of a low income Title 1 school. Growing up can be challenging in their community, but despite it all, they grow, thrive, and come to school with bright eager faces to start their day. Our school in general is made up of over 80% free and reduced lunch families, and about 85% English Language Learners. My students are young explorers who are curious, loving, adventurous, and eager to explore the world, they are just in need of more support to help them become more successful and enjoy school with all of the 21st century materials available and accessible to their needs.
My Project
These stools and floor seats will make a difference in my students learning by just pure engagement. Kids love bright, colorful, and new things they may not have seen before; especially in kindergarten. We need seating to help us stay productive but helps us want to stay in our spots to keep showing what we have learned in various skills and subjects. We have tried flexible seating in our classroom this year and have learned that the kids enjoyed the seating and in a lot of ways; they were always so excited to sit in various spots. Also, it is interesting to see how student A might prefer one seating in reading and prefer a completely different seat in math, depending on the skill and sometimes day. It also provides a social interaction opportunity, kind of like, "oh hi, I see you are sitting on the floor seats just like me, let's sit next to each other and be friends!"
I love how the rainbow stools and floor seats are so adaptable and can be moved around in the classroom to fit the students needs and also to fit my own while managing our classroom.
They are engaging, fun, and non conforming. They allow students to take some small charge in where they want to learn and provides opportunities to make more social interactions by being around different people and find things they have in common. I love how flexible seating has so far changed my classroom this year and I hope to incorporate these new additions to continue increasing engagement and opportunities in our classroom.
