My Students

Hey! You are in my (learning) space! Transition time, structure, and predictability are critical. Valuable minutes can be lost redirecting misbehavior due to too many students in a small space or area. Every child needs to have and know their own spot!

This is a large group of 26 kindergarten students with numbers projected to rise for next fall.

They are attending an older Title I school in the middle of town serving a diverse population of students. The children are eager, active learners and appreciate all opportunities and materials that are introduced to the room. Kindergarten students, in particular, spend a great deal of time at the carpet in whole group learning. Space is important to children; they are learning to define it and recognize it. Sitting among peers can prove challenging as they learn to attend, sit on their bottoms, and keep their hands to themselves. This is hard work when everyone is friends and everyone (it seems) has the wiggles!

My Project

A Place For Everyone Carpet is a large, colorful, rectangular area rug with enough defined spaces for up to thirty children. The rug is divided into five rows of color: red, yellow, green, blue, and purple. Each row is then divided into six spaces. The rug will enhance carpet group time by providing an individual space for each child and serve as an instructional tool for color identification, graphing, and counting. When students have and know their own space, they can transition smoothly and be more engaged. This means more time for teaching and learning! The rug is colorful and appealing, making it engaging and fun for young learners to use.

This project is important because it will serve not only my present group of students, but all students entering the kindergarten program at our school for years to come.

It will be a colorful and appealing addition to the room that will offer every student a space of their own, and at the same time serve as a constant learning tool!
