I have 8 students who have Autism and ADHD. They are active, busy, and seek out movement. Without access to sensory breaks and sensory equipment, my students can not focus or learn. They struggle with fidgeting and staying in their chairs or areas. My students require frequent breaks during lessons to regain their focus and to release any excess energy. If my students' sensory needs are not met, their inappropriate behaviors are more prevalent. The behaviors become a disruption for the entire class and all students are losing instructional time.
These sensory items will be used for my students during scheduled sensory breaks as well as anytime a student needs them. My students don't always know when they need a break but they are learning to identify that and they need access to various sensory activities to meet their sensory needs.
Without the outlet of sensory, we see additional negative behaviors, confusion, lack of focus, and unhappy, counterproductive children.
These sensory items will be used to enhance my students learning environment and help them to self-regulate. Helping them to identify their needs and allowing them access to the proper equipment will increase their chances at independence beyond my classroom.
