My students truly need 3 copies of each of 6 military themed books, including classics like "Farewell to Arms" and "Catch-22", as well as newer books like "The Bomb" and "Enemy Women". These books will grab my students' interest in the military and help them read!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are unique. I know every teacher says this, but I know it is true. My students wear an Air Force uniform to class, stand at attention before class begins, and say the Pledge of Allegiance 9 times a day. Students are required to maintain standard hair cuts, shine their shoes, and iron their uniform correctly.
I teach at a military themed public high school in the Bronx. My students are required to follow many procedures that other students do not. However, they choose this high school They are attracted to the military aspect of my school. When they struggle in school, Air Force sergeants are ready to re-motivate them. My school is a model that works.
The only problem is that many of my students are boys who dislike reading. Their reading levels show it. As tenth graders, they read at an average of the SIXTH GRADE. I try to prepare them for the state tests and SATs. Without improving their reading level, they will not pass.
Studies have proved that the best way to improve student reading levels is to READ. Simple enough, right? So my students spend class time every day reading. In the second month of school, their attention has begun to wane. Most students have finished their first book, and cannot find another one to interest them. They are very motivated and committed, but need books that will keep them interested.
I finally realized that students would be interested in reading about the military. I have gathered eighteen books about the military that I know my students will be motivated to read. This donation is not just about books. These books offer a chance for students to connect with a world outside their own, and more importantly - the chance that they realize teenage boys all over feel just as they do. Boys are all too often overlooked and suppressed when it comes to emotional problems. My "Free-Write Fridays" reveals every week another student who just wants to know he is normal. Just like all of us, they just want to be heard.
Please, please, please give my students a chance at educational and lifelong success. Don't give up on this chance to open up the world of literature and a new world of opportunities!
