Singing Stories With Song Tales

Help me give my students the gift of song tales. These songs have been turned into books and they all have stories that bring language to life in a different way.

My Students

I teach music through a grant program that integrates core subjects into the arts. On any given day, I see grades PreK-6 walk through my classroom, where we explore the world, language, math, and sciences through music.

My school is located in a suburb of Salt Lake City.

It is an older, smaller school and it just became a Title I school. It is located in a wonderful community. I teach all of the 500 students in the school and their beautiful personalities bring smiles to my face. I consider my job to be the best job in the world and my students are absolutely the reason!

My Project

What's better than a good picture book? A book that has it's very own song of course! These books all have songs that go with them or are a collection of songs that tell stories. These books will help me strengthen my students' love of music, love of books and literacy comprehension skills.

These books will bring to life the songs that we use in class.

We sing several of these songs in class on a regular basis. We use these songs to act out the story portrayed in the song, to point out certain story features, such as setting or characters, and to use as a basis for creating our own song tales. These books will bring the lyrics to life as never before with their beautiful illustrations. Students will be able to view an artist's interpretation of the song lyrics and understand them in a new way.

Students will enjoy gathering around, watching and listening as the song is sung to the beautiful pictures. Students will feel more ownership of a book sung to a song that we have heard and sung in class because it will be familiar to them. I will also be able to better ask them comprehension questions about the story as it will be grounded in visual pictures and text rather than just aural words. Students will be able to better recall what happened in the story. It is important for students to be able to recall details of stories and retell them in their own words. This helps them develop comprehension skills, an area in which our student body is sorely lacking.
