Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students attend a Title I campus located in Pasadena, which is an overall Title I district. Many of my students do not have the opportunity to go to Pre-K. As our campus does not have a program and they would have to attend another school. These programs at other campuses fill up very quickly.
Many of our students were impacted by Hurricane Harvey this past August/September 2017, and have had their homes and lives altered in unforeseeable ways.
Where there should have been the excitement for starting Kindergarten, instead other feelings overtook these families and kiddos.
My students were in school for four days before they were out for two weeks. Some lost everything and are still not in their home at this time. The school was able to give them back some sense of normalcy and safety. Their resiliency and desire to still learn are astonishing.
Overall, we are an amazing classroom family, and use our growth mindset to strive to be the best we can be.
My Project
Each year the Kindergarten students at my campus put together a music program for their parents and the school with our music teachers. The theme and songs vary yearly, and this year the magical theme is "Way Down Deep in the Deep Blue Sea!"
Clothes make a statement - Costumes make a story.
The words of Mason Cooley describes perfectly why these items would support my students. My students love listening to music while they work, and many sing (or yell) along with it depending on the song, and dance freely to it multiple times a day! What a gift it is to allow them to perform for their loved ones and our campus for their first school performance, a goal they work months towards.
Each class was assigned a specific "area" of the sea - my class was selected to be sailors. The sailor hats would give my boys a nice sailor hat to wear during their performance. The sailor headbands would provide my girls all with a more "cute" sailor hat to pair with a sailor collar.
