As a new teacher in a city-school district, I have been faced with many challenges--college equipped me with content, but not at all for the diversity and culture of the school I am working in. In this particular district, we see a significant amount of the challenges that our students face on a daily basis and I would do anything to bring a light into their young, spirited lives.
Funny, imaginative, and eager are just a few adjectives I can think of to describe the personalities of my students.
They deserve nothing but the best experiences in their 30+ hours at school every week. My students WANT to learn (even when it is about something totally unrelated to music, like my bird collection). They WANT to play and engage in music, but my classroom does not have the materials that this demographic needs to thrive and succeed! Music has found a way to change my life--I sincerely want for my students to have the opportunity to experience that sensation for themselves. I am very eager to show them the power and influence that music can have on them, for the better!
My Project
I am looking for 30 sets of ukuleles with cases for my 4th-6th grade students. My students have shown an immense interest in my guitars, so I want to give them all the opportunity to delve into that realm of music learning!
There is so much emotional and psychological growth that students will experience through being able to express themselves on a familiar instrument.
Students can't take xylophones home and parents don't want their students squeaking on their recorders all day long. Ukuleles are relatively inexpensive instruments that are portable and convenient. If investing in a few instruments is all it takes to encourage students to express themselves in a peaceful and productive way, then I am going to whatever I can do achieve that for them.
