My students need a large area rug to cushion our bodies for circle time and help organize our space! This circular music rug would transform our classroom into a colorful space, anchored in music.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In the center of a vibrant neighborhood, our school is a dynamic learning community for diverse learners. It is a dual-language International school located in southwest Seattle. With 73.9% of students receiving free or reduced lunch, our school is classified as Title I. Unfortunately, as a low income community, our school has been historically under served. However, Seattle Public Schools are making a concerted effort to close opportunity gaps and provide students with the resources and creative opportunities that they need to succeed.
This is the first year that our school has a full time music program.
Such an experience can open up a whole world to young learners. Students are being given “the tools to express themselves and their ideas, and creative outlets to share their viewpoints with the world.”
Our students bring a myriad of unique perspectives that inspire me to be a better educator. We have a diverse student body from unique cultures and backgrounds that make us stronger as a community.
My Project
In a circle, all students are equidistant from the center of the circle.
We all have equal voice, and we see the faces of all of our classmates.
Circles build our consciousness of one another and give us a sense of wholeness and balance.
When sitting in a circle, it is easier to have students become the leaders of any given activity, such as leading the class during scarf time, rhythm exercises, or while playing instruments.
This rug is centered on music and musical notation! Each space has a different musical symbol for students to sit on. Instead of saying "take a seat on the blue teacup", I will be able to invite students to sit down on the "repeat sign" or the "coda" or the "whole note".
