My Students
Our school is full of amazing musical children. We have 540 students in grades k-6 and each student visits me weekly to make music as a community.
92% of our students are living at or below the poverty line.
Within our school we have a lot of diverse learners. We have both 1-way and 2-way dual language classrooms where our students learn in both English and Spanish.
We also house a dual language gifted program and offer enrichment opportunities for all of our students to dive deeper into special topics.
My Project
As the music teacher I see every student in our school each week. During music class we do not use furniture because we like to have an open space for dancing, creative movement, and for setting up large instruments. Since we do not have chairs for seating, all of our students sit on the floor when they enter the room. Unfortunately we have cold, hard tile on the floor which is not very fun to sit on. This large circle carpet will be a great place for our students to sit comfortably!
In addition to creating a comfy place to sit, the circle shape of the carpet is a great visual reference for young children.
Often times in our class we sit or stand in a circle to play a singing game, do a folk dance, or take turns playing instruments. Having the visual of a circle will help my youngest students and students with special needs with their spatial awareness by providing a visual of a large circle so they can easily find their circle spot with their peers.
