I need music for our choir and community folk dancing initiative. This is year three of a brand new K-12 music program. Sight reading success and multicultural dances are crucial building blocks for this vision!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This project is to help me provide the first ever middle school choir and first ever "Community Monday Meetings" at this school! We are in year three of building a brand new K-12 music program. The formal band/choir strands are starting in the middle school this year. I need more materials to help me learn and teach the students basic singing and choir practice and techniques.
I also need resources to learn how to help support a the community dance on "Monday Meetings" I am tasked with.
We have new leadership that is very focused on community and academic integration. A large part of this morning practice is to start each week positively with a community dance. This is a common practice in cultures around the world and there is great research about the positive relationship building within communities who practice community dance. We are also making the "Monday Meetings" as a motivator to start each week of school on time and with increased attendance.
I see my role of building a music program here as incredibly integral to the building positive community practices. Last year, I started a 6th grade beginning band. It was so positive and the kids were so nervous! Now this year, I am expanding beginning band to the whole 6-8 grades cohort. The other option for these students will be choir. So far, all students have had some exploratory experiences and/or short choral units. They have done a great job and I am sure that with the right resources, I will be able to build a successful and positive community of singers quickly!
