This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are predominately from the south side of Chicago with around ninety-five percent of the school population being low-income.
Ninth through twelfth grades are a part of the band program and if you are not in a band, then the student takes a modern band course.
No matter what, I will teach every student at the school before they graduate; every student will get a music education.
"You know I'm only at school right now because I have your class, right?" These words are spoken by many of my students and the class they are talking about is band! They enjoy coming to school and being challenged while also getting a creative outlet. With so many other music programs being cut from elementary and middle schools, the students look forward to receiving music at the high school level. If a student is not in band, they are asking me at the beginning and end of the school year to have a schedule change so they will get an opportunity to be in band and learn an instrument.
My Project
This year is our first year with choir and this upcoming semester we will also be starting a jazz band. I have been at the school for 6 years now and each year I have been asked about starting a choir. The administration has seen the need and student desire for this course and added it to the schedule!
The choir books, jazz books, and guitar amp will help give the students the starting basics they need to appreciate and enjoy choir and jazz band.
Each year our music school programs are building and growing, more students are getting excited about music ensembles and doing their own research about different music genres.
These books will help better myself as a teacher so I can provide quality instruction to the students.
