I am the librarian/library teacher at PS 251 in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn. Our school is a Title 1 school with over 80% of the population receiving free lunch. Our school has many special programs, but no music or music teacher.
While I see many children through my library program, and I enjoy them all in different ways, I have truly fallen in love with the Pre-Kindergarten. They are completely uncensored, without fear, and are able to quickly absorb everything you teach them.
In my "other life" I teach Music Together -- a Mommy and Me Music and Movement program for children aged birth through 5 and their parents. There are many studies that show that using music in early intervention promotes literacy and even helps children to speak and read earlier in life.
I would love to be able to incorporate some of my music activities into my time with the PreK classes. I usually see them twice a week and it would be so nice to do some music with them that they might even be able to incorporate into a performance. I know that the PreK teachers are already into it!! I'm very excited about this project -- please help bring music back to this school!
