Sing Us a Song, You're the Piano Man...

My students need 4 piano keyboards.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Sukumaran's classroom raised $555

That sounds cool! Can you teach me how to play it? I am the music teacher in a K-8 urban school in Illinois. 77% of our students are low income. 13% have low English proficiency. Both statistics are above state average. All our students are required to take general music classes. They see me once a week for 40 minutes in groups of up to 35 students. I am proficient on the piano, guitar, bass, drums and all woodwind/brass instruments.

As a music educator, I believe that all students (not just the ones in band) should be able to acquire instrumental skills. My general music students ask me almost every week if they can get instruments, but the answer is always… “There’s no money to buy any” It seems unfair that some of our students have parents who can afford piano lessons but the rest have no access. We can teach music through listening and demonstrating but such teacher centric activities will not create truly musically educated students. Therefore, we think that having electronic piano keyboards would allow our students to have an authentic and complete musical education.

We are requesting 4 Yamaha PSR-E213 Portable Keyboards. My students need keyboards to enable them to authentically experience music. Our general music students currently do not have any melodic instruments available to them. Imagine how much more effective teaching them about the Beatles if they could actually play the bass line from Lady Madonna instead of merely listening to it. Rather of relying on me to show them the blues, students could both write and perform the blues on their keyboards. Students could learn about the use of suspended chords by physically playing through the intro to Runaway by Bon Jovi. They could learn how to form diminished/augmented chords by building them up on their keyboards as they play Georgia on my Mind by Ray Charles. Students could enjoy learning the theme music to the Simpsons while identifying the use of tritone intervals. Allowing students to experience the building blocks of music rather than just being passive consumers is the core reason for this proposal.

With your help, my students will buck the trend of passive consumerism. They will be able to perform, create and collaborate in music making. We believe that music education is the right of all our students not just the privileged elite. Your will help ensure a level of access to musical instruments that is rare in this nation.
