This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
We were recently given a class set of tubano drums. These are used to teach the student world drumming and develop a strong sense of rhythm. We have also developed a class set of Orff instrument including mallet instruments, xylophones and a new vibraphone. These tools help students learn to read melodic lines and learn how to play melodies. We have also had 85% of eligible students join special chorus and they are learning proper singing techniques. All of these activities teach students to make music together and encourage a strong sense of community within our school.
This is how you can help us sing well, play better, and sit properly when practicing these skills.
For each of these musical activities, we have been sitting on the floor or standing. For singing, sitting on the floor this makes it difficult to practice correct singing posture and standing for long periods of time promotes bad habits. When playing drums, student must sit on their knees or stand. Using stools will make the instruments accessible to all students. Finally, the stools will allow us to put the mallet instruments on stands, making them more portable. It will also allow us to learn proper sitting techniques for secondary instrumental music skills.
