Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is located in a rural area. We face many challenges due to our rural location. Sixty-nine percent of students come from low income families. Many of my students have limited access to cultural and artistic experiences. They cannot easily attend live performances or visit art galleries and museums.
My students deserve the opportunity to fully experience the arts.
My music class gives students the chance to develop and explore their creativity. It provides them with a chance to broaden their horizons and learn about others through the arts. It also gives them a healthy outlet to express their emotions. They learn to work together and appreciate each others' differences.
Although our school's rural location limits us in some ways, it also provides unique benefits. Our students belong to a tight knit community. The school is the center of the community and we receive great support from families and community members. It is evident that our community wants our students to have all the opportunities they deserve, but we just need a little help to get there.
My Project
We do many different activities in music class. One of our favorite activities is listening to stories that have been set to music. I use several different folk songs for this purpose in my music class. All students deserve an opportunity to listen to stories and songs. Many of my students are fortunate enough to have parents that read and sing to them at home. However, I have a several students that do not have this opportunity due to various circumstances.
Please help me support my students by providing us with quality picture books based on classic folk songs.
I will sing and read these books to my students. Students will also have the opportunity to read or sing along to these books independently in small group centers. The purpose of this activity in music class is to develop listening skills and provide students a chance to hear the expressiveness music should include. Additionally, this activity provides students with exposure to literature. Through this exposure students are also able to develop their reading skills.
